Using the simplest, yet most powerful features of the newest PowerPoint application, learn how to design a research poster of any size. This seminar explores best layout practices in respect to themes, colours, fonts, figures/graphics and other useful tips.

Depending on the offering location, in-class instruction will be demonstrated in either MS PowerPoint 2007 or 2010. Differences between the two versions are mentioned when applicable to a given concept. Those working in a MAC environment can also benefit from the instruction though some keystrokes and procedures will be different.

Prerequisites: Before enrolling in this course, participants should possess a basic understanding of mouse operation, file and folder creation, saving and locating files, and browsing the internet. We offer a Basic Computer Skills course if you require acquisition of these skills. If you are not sure about your current skill set, click on the skills assessment form (coming soon) to evaluate your expertise.

Objectives:

In this seminar, participants will:

  • Explore the PowerPoint environment, examining essential tools and views
  • Create a poster from a blank slide by modifying slide theme/layout, text and graphic placement
  • Be exposed to relevant considerations/ best practices in poster creation including graphic quality for print, negative space, text size, etc
